No matter how hardcore of an environmentalist you are, at this point there should be almost unanimous agreement that plastic is absolutely terrible for the environment, long-term. Watch this clip from a 60 minutes special if you still aren’t convinced.
The issue is that plastic is really damn good at performing the tasks we have all come to rely on for it. And that’s why it’s been so difficult to extinguish from our daily lives. Straws being one of those things. Straws are awesome because a lot of non-water beverages can stain your teeth or damage the enamel. Kids also love them so it’s difficult to give them up completely. With this movement away from plastic in recent years, a lot of establishments, like Starbucks, have tried to institute paper straws. The issue is, most paper straws are so weak. Many aren’t durable and get soggy nearly instantly.
After testing a variety of paper (and metal…yikes) straws available online, this Hiware version is the one that most clearly stood out to me as one I could use daily in my smoothies. They are durable enough to hold up for >20 minutes without wilting and they feel great on your teeth and lips. The variety of colors also will be received well if you have children. At $14 for a pack of 500 this is a no brainer for us.
