what we like

  • Fits best for those looking for: A soft, moisture wicking, form fitting short that hits above the knee and doesn’t balloon out
  • Perfectly tailored fit around the thigh
  • Soft, stretchy material which holds up over time
  • Material is also sweat wicking and dries quickly
  • Elastic inside the waistband creates a comfortable fit
  • 2 front pockets and 2 back pockets are accessible and perfectly deep enough
  • Has a faint stripe pattern which actually looks pretty classy
  • Sharp looking enough to wear off the golf course

keep in mind

  • Would prefer if there was no logo at all on the back – UA has a camouflaged “UA” on the back right pocket which is subtle enough to not be too noticeable either way
  • Inseam says 11″ but it’s actually more like 10″-11″. I had it manually shortened to 9″ to give it an even more athletic look
  • The faint stripe pattern might not be exactly what you are you looking for if you simply just want a bold color pair of shorts

review

Golf shorts should theoretically be fairly simple. Just give me a pair that has the following qualities:

  1. Soft/moisture wicking
  2. Have belt loops
  3. Deep enough front pockets and open back pockets to easily place tees and golf balls
  4. Comfortable and form fitting above the knee

Most companies address 1-3 fairly easily, but #4 is where you tend to see the most issues. Golf clothing manufacturers have finally started to come around in recent years, but many are still stuck thinking they are catering to 55-65 year old guys who like big wide shorts which hit at the knee and balloon outwards. The reality is, we are all keeping in better shape these days and are looking for ones that are more form fitting and hitting above the knee.

A lot of UA clothes we have tried over the years have been solid yet unremarkable. But they really did a great job with this pair of golf shorts. It has one of the more unique and softer fabrics you will find in a golf short which provides a really flexible and light feel. Best of all, they dry extremely quickly and are moisture wicking. The tapered fit of these means they fit nicely around the thigh and hit just above the knee. I wear these 3-5 days a week in the summertime while on the course and when I go out. These will be tough to dethrone anytime soon.

Sizing Tips & FAQs

How long is the inseam?

UA says 11″ but the ones I have measure between 10-11″. I had a tailor adjust them even shorter to 9″ which I find to be perfect.

If I’m between sizes, should I size up or size down?

Usually I have an easy answer for this question but it’s a bit tricker here given the fact that there is elastic in the waistband. If you want a snugger fit and don’t want to be reliant on a belt, I’d size down. But otherwise they run fairly true to size.

I have thick thighs, will the tapered cut fit me?

I think so. The fabric is really stretchy and soft so even if you’re on the thiccer side, you’ll be good.

Lululemon Commission Short

Obviously, we love most of Lulu’s clothing given the high number of top picks they have on this site (Workout Shirt, Golf Polo). Their Commission Short is a solid option but it doesn’t match the feel and fit of these UA ones…one of the rare times we would ever say that. These shorts are also almost double the price.

Bonobos Highland Golf Shorts

These are really solid and were strongly in the running to be our top pick. Stretchy material and comfortable. I like the fit and feel of the UA ones a bit more, however.

Birddogs

Love Birddogs as a company and even own a pair of shorts which I wear to the beach and at the pool. Their golf shorts just never quite do it for me. I think the materials, design and construction are on point. It’s the fit that is lacking. They tend to balloon out at the bottom and feel a little too old man-y for my taste. But if you are looking for that look, great choice.

Nike Golf Shorts

Nike kills it in so many product categories, but the fit of a lot of their clothing leaves a lot to be desired. Their flex shorts are just a little too balloon-y looking and don’t quite feel as form fitting as the UA ones.

Peter Millar Stealth Performance Short

We have been hearing fantastic things about this Peter Millar Short but have yet to test them ourselves. High on our list of things to try in the near future.
