Best Shaving Cream for Men

As of December 2019

The 90-day average price as of 8/31/2020 on Amazon is $10.00, according to data from Keepa. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.

Amazon is always your best bet for Proraso products. It never goes on sale so you’re likely getting the best price possible. Proraso does offer 3 different types of this cream. The above “moisturizing/sandalwood” version (maroon), the sensitive skin version (white) and the standard version (green). They’re all extremely similar and I personally prefer the sandalwood smell the most.

what we like

  • Convenient bowl shaped container allows you to lather your brush without having to use a separate bowl or the palm of your hand
  • Great scent
  • Moisturizes skin and helps to lift bristles for a smooth shave
  • Lasts a very long time (7-8 months for me)
  • Always the same price and readily available on Amazon

keep in mind

  • Needs to be used with a brush otherwise it’ll be extremely hard to lather. If you want a straight cream version of this product in a tube, they offer it here
  • Your first few uses of it while it is completely full will likely lead to some spillover of the cream over the edges when you try to close it
  • Too big and bulky to travel with. You’ll need to buy a separate travel sized shave cream (we like this one)

If you’ve already experienced the joys of shaving with a brush, you’ll understand why we’re such big fans of this cream. If not, you might want to consider investing in one of those first to get what we believe is the ideal daily shaving experience.

Once you find a brush you like, the next challenge is finding a cream that is:

  1. Cheap
  2. Lathers well
  3. Smells good
  4. Moisturizes
  5. Lasts a long time

Proraso’s shaving soap in a bowl does all the above better than any other brand of shaving cream we have tried while also adding the benefit of never having to use a separate container or the palm of your hand to work up a lather.

The latter (no pun intended) is really clutch because it really reduces the messiness and waste of having to use a cream in a bottle. Before I switched to this shaving soap in a bowl, I noticed that while using a tube I would always squeeze out more than I needed and the remainder would sometimes cake up and be hard to drain. No such issues anymore since I apply my brush directly to the bowl itself.

Proraso makes it in 3 different types including it’s standard version (green), sensitive skin version (white) and moisturizing/sandalwood version (maroon). I have tested them all and did not notice much of a difference amongst the three. I personally enjoy the smell of sandalwood which is why that has become my go-to. But any one will do.

While you’ll likely need to buy a separate travel sized shaving cream to take with you on vacations, the container shape, cost, smell and moisturizing ability of this shaving soap makes it our top choice.

Sizing Tips & FAQs

What is your full morning shave routine?

  1. Rub pre-shave oil across entire face to loosen up facial hair
  2. Wet shave brush
  3. Lather shave brush with shave soap in bowl and spread across face
  4. Shave using razor
  5. Wash face using facial cleanser
  6. Apply after-shave
  7. Apply post-shave moisturizing balm

How do you lather with this?

The beauty of the bowl shape is you don’t need a separate bowl to get a lather going with your brush. You could if you wanted to but this soap saves you that step.

If you just want a regular cream tube version of the same soap, you can buy this one. Obviously you’ll need to work up a lather using your hand or a separate bowl if you go with this option.

Proraso Shaving Soap in a Bowl (Standard Version – Green)

Same exact soap as our pick, just not in a sandalwood version.

Proraso Shaving Soap in a Bowl (Sensitive Skin – White)

Same exact soap as our pick, just in a supposedly sensitive skin version. I have super sensitive skin and I haven’t noticed a major difference

C.O. Bigelow Premium Shave Cream (Our pick for best sized travel shaving cream)

In a 1.7oz. bottle for under $8/each, it’s worth buying a few of these for the roads. Consistency is almost identical to Proraso’s cream/soap. They also sell this at Bath & Body Works in case you have a store near you and are in a rush
