THE JOAT'S Advice

The 90-day average price as of 8/31/2020 on Amazon is $29.95, according to data from Keepa. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.

We are big fans of the conditioner as well so the best move is to buy them both together for ~$40 using this link. Otherwise, this shampoo almost never goes on sale and is consistently priced around $30 per 16oz. bottle

what we like

  • Actually does reduce the amount of hair fallout in the shower versus what I was experiencing before
  • Does create volume without leaving hair feeling crunchy or brittle
  • Solid ingredient list including Biotin and Saw Palmetto
  • Sulfate free
  • No parabens
  • Well made bottle with built-in dispenser
  • No skin or scalp irritation (My skin is usually pretty sensitive)
  • 16 oz. size lasts a very long time
  • Equally as solid conditioner pairing

keep in mind

  • This is a no brainer for us. In almost a year of consistent use I haven’t found anything to dislike

review

As most guys realize at some point in their twenties or thirties, it’s harrowing to see the thick head of hair you grew up with start slowly thinning away. While products like Minoxidil and Finasteride can help mitigate the fallout, you tend to hear more stories of frustration than success. (Side note: it’s mind boggling that we’ll probably land on Mars before we figure out how to permanently grow or remove hair)

As someone who is dealing with thinning hair and has tried all the above remedies and tested virtually every product imaginable, I will say that finding this shampoo has been one of my more positive experiences in recent memory. While I cannot sit here and tell you that it has led to any sort of hair regrowth, it has certainly reduced the amount of hair fallout and does lead to my hair looking and feeling thicker.

For the past 3-5 years, I’ve tried virtually every thickening shampoo product I could get my hands on and none have produced the sort of volume and feel I get from Pura D’Or original. The ingredient list is solid and the price/quantity you get per bottle is extremely reasonable. I’ve been using the shampoo, combined with the equally as solid conditioner, 2-3 times a week for the past year or so and have definitely noticed a meaningful difference. Even if you’re blessed with a full head of hair, this is still absolutely worth your time to give it a try.

Sizing Tips & FAQs

How often do you use it?

2-3x a week. I use the conditioner a little more frequently

Is it unisex?

Definitely. The scent is neutral and can work just as well for women.

Does it ever go on sale?

Not that I have seen. It’s pretty consistently $30 for a 16oz. bottle. We recommend buying the combo with the conditioner for ~$40.

Brickell Men’s Products Daily Strengthening Shampoo for Men

I enjoyed Brickell’s shampoo and felt my hair strengthen and gain a little more volume after use. However, my hair felt drier and not as smooth as it does after using Pura D’Or. Moreover, it’s pretty expensive at $20 for an 8oz. bottle which doesn’t even have a proper dispenser.

Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Lemon Sage Thickening Shampoo

If you ever got your hair washed at a Supercuts growing up, there’s a good chance they used this shampoo on you. It smells amazing and the Tea Tree leaves your scalp tingling afterwards. However, I did not think it made my hair any more voluminous or thick at all.

L’Oréal Paris Elvive Volume Filler Thickening Cleansing Shampoo

This one smells incredible also and is extremely low priced. However, it dried out my skin so there must be something in the ingredient list which produced a bad reaction. Either way, it wasn’t as volume producing as the Pura D’Or.

Every Man Jack 2-In-1 Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner

If you live with a wife or girlfriend, you should know that you’ll get clowned for using a 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner regardless of how effective it is. Like the Paul Mitchell Tee Tree shampoo above, this one also produces an amazing Tea Tree scent and feeling. I just did not think it was that effective in reducing fallout or creating thickness.

Just For Men Control GX Grey Reducing Shampoo

If you’re greying in addition to thinning, I’m sure you have noticed this product in commercials. I’m greying a little bit on the sides and decided I’d give this a shot and I found it to be really unimpressive in making much of a difference at all. Its messy and just not overly effective.

Ultrax Labs Hair Surge | Caffeine Hair Loss Hair Growth Stimulating Shampoo

There are a bunch of these type of caffeine infused hair growth shampoos floating around on Amazon. I tried this one for a few months and did not notice the difference that many reviewers have enthusiastically commented. It’s extremely expensive at between $60-80 per 8oz bottle.
