Walmart sells these by the can for $4 each. Amazon sells 6 packs for about $24. You should never have to pay more than that. Whole Foods recently came out with their own version of Heart of Palms pasta which is also solid but not available online.

what we like

  • Best for those looking for: A low carb, keto friendly, pasta substitute
  • Only 4g of Carbs per serving (12g per container)
  • Noodles stay firm and do not get soggy like other pasta substitutes
  • Easy to cook (can eat it straight out of the container or give it a quick boil)
  • Pasta sauce coats it well

keep in mind

  • Obviously nothing is going to replicate pasta in a low carb form, as this can taste/feel a little “bamboo shoot-y”
  • However, if you make a good sauce you won’t notice a major difference
  • For people that aren’t on uber strict low carb keto diets, the best move is to do a 50/50 blend of this with regular pasta
  • This stuff isn’t cheap either – $4 for basically only 8oz. of dry pasta

review

Let’s just start by stating the obvious: nothing is ever going to be able to truly replicate pasta. Along with pizza, pasta might the GOAT food type on this planet. However, obviously if you want to stay in shape it’s probably not a great idea to eat it too often. Most people who go keto or with other low carb diets often complain about how much they miss having pasta. So, what if I told you that you could still satisfy that fix by using Palmini instead?

Most other pasta substitutes I have tried over the years just don’t get the job done. (Get out of here with spiralizing soggy Zoodles). The prep time can be cumbersome or the texture is just really unpleasant. Palmini offers the best we have seen and tried in terms of providing a pasta experience which is like 50-75% as good as the real thing. The texture is firm and al-dente feeling and the pre-cut noodles are well shaped and easy to grip with a fork. Pasta sauce coats it nicely and helps to mask the heart of palm flavor. For people who aren’t on super strict, low carb diets, the best move is to pair this with regular flour pasta noodles either 75/25 (Palmini to Pasta) or 50/50. For those that are on strict diets, this is the best option you will find to satisfy that craving a few times a month.

Sizing Tips & FAQs

Weren’t these guys on Shark Tank?

Yes….yes they were

How much is in each container?

Once you drain the water, the net result is about 8oz. of actual pasta

How many carbs?

4g per serving or 12g per 8oz. container

Do you boil it?

I like to soften the texture so I do bring it to a boil and add some salt to the boiling process

What kind of pasta sauce do you put on top?

You can use absolutely anything. A good pesto or tomato sauce works great. My go to is Chrissy Teigen’s Cacio e Pepe.

Spiralizer 5-Blade Vegetable Slicer

We might make a full post on spiralizers down the road, but thought we would drop this one in here as an option. The common pasta substitute everyone talks about is zucchini noodles (zoodles). You take a piece of zucchini and run it through a spiralizer like this to spit out a nice handful of cut vegetable noodles which looks like spaghetti. (Spaghetti Squash is the other option). Issue with this method is that zucchini is extremely soggy so either you have to take the noodles and manually dry them out considerably or be forced to eat a sort of soupy pasta dish. It’s not ideal either way and I stopped using my spiralizer altogether years ago.

Explore Cuisine Organic Edamame Spaghetti

Edamame spaghetti is a fine substitute which is packed with protein and fiber. It’s higher in carbs than heart of palm pasta and the texture isn’t quite as firm.

Palmini Low Carb Lasagna

Palmini Low Carb Angel Hair

Palmini also offers their dish in 2 other pasta forms: lasagna and angel hair. Both are just as solid as the linguine.
