THE JOAT'S Advice

The 90-day average price as of 8/31/2020 on Amazon is $68.25, according to data from Keepa. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.

These have been really marked up on Amazon as a result of Covid so be careful of spending more than is needed. Take a look at eBay. No reason to spend over $70 on this (even though you would potentially use this everyday for years to come).

review

There are really only two go-to options in the clippers game: Andis and Wahl. To get me started on my search, I first asked each barber at my barbershop in Philly for their preferred pick for a beard trimmer/T outliner and it was near unanimous agreement for this particular Andis clipper. While the 74000 provides better overall performance, the additional cost isn’t worth it for the 95% of us who are just looking for a good weekly solution.

The key to any wireless clippers is to make sure you buy a lithium ion battery. These provide the most efficient charging and last the longest. With good care, you can easily have these for a decade without an issue.

At the end of the day, there isn’t a huge difference between Andis and Wahl but after several years of using each one I give a slight preference to Andis. I find the blades and attachments to be sturdier and provide a smoother overall trim. The included charging base with the 32400 is a nice addition and helps to keep the clippers organized and within reach. Just be careful not to overpay for these as you should never have to pay more than roughly $65.

Sizing Tips & FAQs

Which attachment combs does it come with?

The 32400 comes with 4 different attachments:

0.5: 1/16″

1.0: 1/8″

2.0: 1/4″

3.0: 3/8″

How long does the battery last?

I always keep it on the charging base but the battery can last up to around 2 hours.

What does zero gapping mean?

As a default setting, most clippers have a very small difference (~0.2mm) between the front and back blades. This helps to prevent nicks and cuts. You can take out the screws on these clippers and realign the blades to completely eliminate this difference and create an even closer cut. This video provides the easiest explanation as to how you can do it.

How do you care/clean these clippers?

Andis includes a brush to remove hair and a small bottle of oil which you should apply to the blades before each use.

Wahl Aqua Blade Rechargeable Wet Dry Lithium Ion Deluxe Trimming Kit

This is a very close second overall. It comes with more attachment combs, a carrying case and can be used in the shower. However, there is no charging base and the blade and attachments feel just slightly more durable on the Andis. Cannot go wrong either way.

Andis 74000 Professional Cordless T-Outliner Beard/Hair Trimmer

More powerful and sturdier blade than the 32400. Also comes with a better charging base. More than double the price though. Better suited for true barbers and professionals.

Andis 04710 Professional T-Outliner Beard/Hair Trimmer

Basically the same as the 74000 except it is powered by an 8 foot cord. If you want a non-wireless solution this is the best option.
