what we like

  • Note: This is no longer our top pick. Click here for our updated choice!
  • Durable
  • They compress (at least somewhat..on the edges)
  • YKK zippers (YKK is considered the gold standard in zipper quality)
  • Really reasonable cost wise
  • Nice handles on each individual bag
  • Wide variety of colors

keep in mind

  • Can’t mix and match bag sizes. So you are stuck with the four varying ones for better or worse
  • Not see through so you can’t see what’s in each cube without unzipping
  • When the bag is full, unless you are packing it with super light garments, the compression really doesn’t remove as much air from the pack as you would expect (the picture on Amazon is a little deceptive). It more or less just tightens up the sides/edges and makes clothes fit into your bag more seamlessly

review

Until recently, whenever I would hear of someone using packing cubes I would immediately think of the scene from Austin Powers where Elizabeth Hurley starts unpacking her bag in the hotel and Austin yells, “Nerd Alert!” And then you get older and you see someone explain to you the rationale of using them and you wonder what took you so damn long to figure out what Vanessa Kensington already knew.

Packing cubes, of any kind, are a #nobrainer. Here’s why:

  1. Space saving – If they compress, even a little bit, they help maximize the amount of you can fit into a bag
  2. Organization – Visually it’s so much easier to track where everything is placed within your suitcase/backpack. Put pants in one bag, underwear/bras in another, socks in a third, etc.
  3. Spill Protection – Say something leaks in your bag…at least the other items are fully covered
  4. TSA/Security Checkpoint Protection – If TSA stops and asks you to open your bag, at least you don’t have to worry about all your stuff being exposed and unnecessarily touched
  5. Unpacking – If you want to easily/lazily unpack when you get there, it’s so easy to just take these packs out and toss them in the dresser as opposed to having to sift through and pick up each group of items one by one

There are hundreds of packing cubes on the market and we researched and tried many. Our all-in favorite and the one we always came back to was Bagail. The YKK zippers, compression functionality, handles and low price overshadows the lack of a see through fabric and makes this our choice for best packing cubes.

Sizing Tips & FAQs

How well does the compression feature work?

If you pack it with clothes that have any structure to them, not as well as you would expect it to given the Amazon pictures. Using the compression zippers more or less just makes the space a little more efficient which is still useful.

Do the zippers get stuck?

Like most packing cubes, they’re not seamless. But they are YKK zippers which means they are durable and work well.

How many bags come in each one? How big is each bag?

4 per Amazon order:

#1 – 11″ x 6.75″

#2 – 13.75″ x 9.75″

#3 – 13.75″ x 12.75″

#4 – 17.5″ x 13.7″

There are so many different types of packing cubes out there. We checked these ones out as well:

Eagle Creek Pack-it Specter Compression Cube Set

These are a really solid set and might have been our pick if money was not an issue. Eagle Creek offers very similar performance and features to the Bagail set but only come in a set of 2 and are almost double the cost.

AmazonBasics 4-Piece Packing Travel Organizer Cubes Set

There are a lot of Amazon created products (namely in clothing) which miss the mark, but their more utilitarian items like travel products and chargers, usually offer really good value for the quality. These packing cubes are solid. If having a compression cube isn’t a priority for you, these are certainly worth a look since they come in a variety of colors and you can more easily mix and match sizes with different combos of bag sizes. We recommend only buying the light colored versions of these. The dye from the colored versions is known to stain clothing if the cube gets wet.

eBags classic Packing Cubes

These are really similar to the AmazonBasics ones but are more expensive. If you’re looking for a non-compression cube, the AmazonBasics ones will suffice.
