what we like

  • Charcoal in the formula really helps to clean dirt
  • Very effective in reducing appearance of blackheads and breakouts
  • Only need to use a small dime size amount each time meaning the 5oz. bottle lasts forever
  • Cologne type scent isn’t too overpowering
  • Foams up nicely after you rub it together in your hands and apply to face
  • Very low priced under $8

keep in mind

  • The charcoal color means it can spray on the wall/sink if some gets out before you rub it together which turns it into a white foam. Works best if used in the shower

review

There are few products out there more difficult to recommend than face wash. Our skin types vary so much from person to person that it’s nearly impossible to suggest a universal one that is equally beneficial to all.

This might be one of the exceptions. I’ve tried probably 20-30 face washes over the years: everything from higher priced Vichy ones to standard Neutrogena/Clean & Clear brands. Most perform fairly similarly. I have oily skin which is prone to blackheads and the occasional breakout and none of the ones I tried really did a good job keeping that at bay consistently until I started using this L’Oreal one.

The main aesthetician at the spa I go to (once or twice a year…I’m not that bougie) strongly recommended that I use one with charcoal in it. Apparently the properties in charcoal make it a very effective cleaner of dirt which really helps to eliminate blackheads. In the few months I have used this daily cleaner I have noticed a drastic improvement in my skin quality and much lower recurrence of blackheads and breakouts. If you have been struggling to find a reliable face wash we highly suggest giving this L’Oreal charcoal one a look.

Sizing Tips & FAQs

How much should I use?

You really only need a dime sized portion. It spreads and foams up very nicely

How long does a 5oz. bottle last?

Months and months. One bottle goes a long way

What are all the ingredients?

aqua/water, glycerin, myristic acid, stearic acid, palmitic acid, potassium hydroxide, lauric acid, butylene glycol, sorbitol, glyceryl stearate se, peg-8, ascorbyl glucoside, charcoal powder, ci 77499/iron oxides, citric acid, limonene, linalool, mentha piperita extract/peppermint leaf extract, methylisothiazolinone, moringa pterygosperma seed extract, polyglycerin-10, polyglyceryl-10 myristate, polyglyceryl-10 stearate, polyquaternium- 4, salicylic acid, tetrasodium edta, parfum/fragrance

Will it dry out my skin?

I have super sensitive skin and this has performed the best out of any face wash I have ever used. Obviously your skin could be different so make sure to test it out if you are dry skin prone or potentially allergic to any of the above ingredients

Vichy Normaderm Daily Acne Treatment Face Wash

I used this Vichy wash for almost 3 years. It’s a higher end brand and as a result, more expensive at nearly $18/bottle. It’s a really solid cleanser but it didn’t solve all of my issues as I still ended up with occasional blackheads and breakouts

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Fighting Facial Cleanser

This is the one you see in nearly every single drugstore. It’s similar to the above Vichy cleanser as it contains Salicylic Acid and does a fine job helping to control acne. It just did not do enough for me

Clean & Clear Oil-Free Deep Action Exfoliating Facial Scrub

This is also the other bottle you have seen or bought a million times. It’s a good exfoliating scrub but it tended to dry out my skin. Like the above two, it still left a lot to be desired as I would still get blackheads and breakouts

Neutrogena Clear Pore Facial Cleanser / Face Mask containing Kaolin & Bentonite Clay

I’m a fan of this particular Neutrogena cleaner/mask and I still use it weekly. It’s a really unique texture which can spread as like a clay face mask. It leaves my skin glowing and I recommend checking it out if you are interested in a face wash which can also act as a face mask

Cetaphil Facial Cleanser

For whatever reason, Cetaphil has always been underwhelming for me when compared to CeraVe. I never noticed a big difference in my face after using this face wash and didn’t find anything too remarkable about it.

CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser

CeraVe makes some very high quality products and this is a nice everyday face wash option. Of all the basic drugstore brands, we think this works the best. It’s not as good as the L’Oreal Charcoal wash but it’s a solid second choice
